A Study of the Qi Flow along the Meridian Channel Using 18F-FDG Brain PET Image

The purpose of the present study was to validate the acupuncture stimulation of brain-circulating and nonbrain-circulating channels. In order to compare the effect of acupuncture on brain-circulating Gallbladder channel and nonbrain-circulating Lung channel. PET for the assessment of cranial glucose metabolic changes and EAV for the evaluation of five evolutive phases were utilized. When acupuncture was administered on Gallbladder channel acupoints(GB 1, 20, 21, 24, 33, 37, 41), glucose metabolism in bilateral cerebellar hemisphere was increased with 18F-^FDG PET. However, acupuncture treatment on Lung channel acupoints(LU 1, 3, 8, 10) was administered, glucose metabolism showed no fluctuation at any cranial regions with 18F-^FDG PET. To further prove the above results, non-acupoints which were separated about 5 mm to 1 cm form each matching acupoint and were not overlapped with other acupoints of either Gallbladder channel (GB1, 20, 24, 41) or Lung channel (LU1, 3, 10) were selected. When acupuncture was administered on these non-acupoints, the glucose metabolism showed no change at any cranial regions with 18F-^FDG PET. At the same time of acupuncture treatment, EAV was also applied on each volunteer. Theoretically, the five evolutive phases are known to be closely related with current status of balance and harmony of each organ in the body. Therefore, the less the deviation of five evolutive phases, the better the Qi energy balance each person has. When the acupuncture was administered on the Gallbladder channel, five phase deviation was reduced 0.81 and 0.22 on the right and left side, respectively. When the acupuncture was administered on the Lung channel, five phase deviation was reduced 0.04 on the right side and increased 0.02 on the left side. When the acupuncture was administered on the non-acupoints, five phase deviation was increased 0.22 and 0.24 on the right and left side respectively. Based on the above five phase deviation results, it was proven that change of five phase deviation could be used as a predictor for a successful acupuncture treatment. Therefore, the Gallbladder channel acupuncture caused the five phase deviation to be reduced by adjusting the Qi flow, maintaining the body balance and harmony.
