Influence of Acanthopanacis Cortex Ethyl Alcohol Extract on the Hemodynamics and Obesity

This study was designed to investigate the effects of Acanthopanacis cortex ethyl alcohol extract (AC) on the proliferation of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) and mean arterial blood pressure (MABP) in normal rats and ischemic rats, and changes of weight, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, triglyceride, free fatty acid, total lipid, and phospholipid level in the serum of obese mice induced by high fat diet. Experimental groups of rCBF and MABP in normal and ischemic rats as follows ; Sample A was the Acanthopanacis cortex leaves ethyl alcohol extract (ACL) injected group, Sample B was the Acanthopanacis cortex stems ethyl alcohol extract (ACS) injected group, Sample C was Acanthopanacis cortex roots ethyl alcohol extract (ACR) injected group. Experimental groups of obese mice induced by high fat diet were as follows ; Normal group was fed with normal diet and administered with distilled water to mice for 7 weeks, Control group was fed with high fat diet and administered with distilled water to mice for 7 weeks, Sample A was the group fed which was high diet and administered with ACL of 500 ㎎/㎏/mouse/day to mice for 7 weeks, Sample B was the group fed which was high diet and administered with ACS of 500 ㎎/㎏/mouse/day to mice for 7 weeks, Sample C was the group fed which was high diet and administered with ACR of 500 ㎎/㎏/mouse/day to mice for 7 weeks. The results were as follows ; In normal rats, Sample A and Sample C significantly increased rCBF in a dose-dependent manner, but Sample B significantly decreased rCBF and MABP in a dose-dependent manner. Sample A increased MABP. In ischemic rats, rCBF was significantly and stably improved by ACR (10 ㎎/㎏, i.p.) during the period of cerebral reperfusion, which was contrasted with the findings of rapid and marked increase in control group. Sample B and Sample C significantly decreased the body weight in rats fed high fat diet. Sample A significantly decreased the serum LDL-cholesterol, triglyceride, free fatty acid, total lipid, phospholipid level in rats fed high fat diet, and Sample B significantly decreased the serum free fatty acid, total lipid, phospholipid level in rats fed high fat diet Sample C significantly decreased the serum total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, triglyceride, free fatty acid, total lipid, phospholipid level in rats fed high fat diet, and significantly increased the serum HDL-cholesterol in rats which was fed with high fat diet. From the above results, it was thought that all part of acanthopanacis cortex was effective for hemodynamics and obesity and especially root extract (ACR) was more effective than other parts.
