도산안창호의 교육사상에 나타난 체육교육의 현대적의의
(The) Contemporary Meanings of Physical Education in Dosan Ahn Chang-ho's Educational Philosophy

Dosan Ahn Chang ho spread progressive philosophies for the independence of the nation and the people under the colonial rule of Japanese imperialism with the vestige of pre modern Confucianism, and possessed progressive and democratic physical education philosophy. In order to understand education philosophy implied in Dosan Ahn Chang ho’s educational philosophy, this study examined Dosan’s educational philosophy and the purposes, contents and methods of physical education in his educational philosophy and drew conclusions as follows. Dosan’s philosophy of virtue, physical strength and knowledge maintained education containing physical education, getting out of the intellectualistic trend of Confucianism centering on knowledge and virtue, believing that the three way education pursues an all around person. He thought that such an educational person can be raised through sound personality training, sacred unity training and democratic citizen training based on Musilyeokhaeng (practice diligently in truthful and substantial ways). He put the purposes of physical education in training the body, strengthening the spirit, developing sound personality and inspiring patriotism and mentioned detailed goals such as physical development, the cultivation of healthy mind, the development of sociality, the use of spare time, etc. The contents of physical education centered on military style gymnastics, which is effective in physical training, and included various events for leisure activities such as ball games and athletic sports through athletic meetings as well as public health as theoretical education for healthy life. In this way, the contents comprehended almost every area of physical education. The method of physical education was collective and Spartan training for group cohesion and the spirit of unity. As presented above, his general physical education philosophy aimed at building sound personality based on Musilyeokhaeng and originated from his anti Japanese and patriotic passion for the national independence. His physical education philosophy was not limited to theories but was actively implemented for the future of the nation and the people through Heungsandan Movement, the construction of ideal towns, the foundation of Daeseong School, etc. Thus, not only as a modern Korean philosopher but also as a theorist and performer of modern physical education, Dosan must be appreciated highly for his contribution to the development of physical education philosophy.
