ABSTRACT Effects of Curcuma longa Rhizoma (CLR) on chronic renal failure in rats. Sang Dae Kim Dept. of Oriental Medicine Graduate School of Dongshin University Directed by Prof. Kim Young-Seung, O.M.D., Ph.D. Irreversible and progressive loss of nephron is major feature of chronic renal failure (CRF). Patients with CRF frequently have proteinuria, loss of renal mass, elevated serum BUN, creatinine levels and lowered glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Curcuma longa Rhizoma (CLR) has been widely used for epigastric and hypochondriac pain due to qi stagnation and abdominal pain resulting from amenorrhea in oriental countries. Recently curcumine, isolated from CLR, is known to have anti-oxidative effects, which were involved in anti-bacterial and anti-cancer effects. For these reasons, this study was designed to investigate the possibility of CLR as a new drug for CRF. The present author investigated the effects of CLR on CRF induced by injection of adriamycin(ADR) and cisplatin(Cis-P) in terms of changes in body weights and renal mass, urine volume, BUN and creatinine levels, creatinine clearance, electrolytes levels and histopathological changes in renal tissues. In this study, oral administration of CLR decreased total protein level in urine, and also decreased levels of BUN and creatinine in serum, which were elevated by induction of CRF. Creatinine clearance was restored to that of CTL by oral administration of CLR. In histopathological observation, CLR group showed prevented tendency of tissue damage shown in CRF group. These results imply possibility of CLR as a new drug for CRF. For these reasons, the present author demonstrates that CRF can be used to treat patients with CRF and further study will need to elucidate the exact mechanisms involved in efficacy of CLR on CRF.
