Abstract The Effects of Catalpol on 5/6 Nephrectomy-induced Chronic Renal Failure Rats Lee Kang-Hwan Dept. of Oriental Medicine Graduate School of Dongshin University Supervised by Prof. Kim Young-Seung, O.M.D., Ph.D. The aim of present study was to investigate recovery effects of catalpol which has been used clinically in chronic renal failure therapy. Mice had 5/6 nephrectomy to induce chronic renal failure. The results were as follows: 1. The protein amount in urine per 24 hrs of catalpol treated group as compared to the control group was significantly reduced. 2. The glucose amount in blood of catalpol treated group as compared to the control group significantly increased. The creatinine in serum of catalpol treated group as compared to the control group was significantly inhibited. 3. The WBC in serum of catalpol treated group as compared to the control group was significantly inhibited. The hemoglobin, hematocrit in serum of catalpol treated group as compared to the control group was significantly increased. 4. The construction change in kidney of catalpol treated group as compared to the control group was significantly inhibited. 5. The factor(type IV collagen & angiotensin II type 1 (AT1) receptor ) of catalpol treated group as compared to the control group was significantly inhibited which induce the construction change in kidney. The above results suggest that catalpol partially improved the function of the kidney Key words : Catalpol, nephrectomy, chronic renal failure
