ABSTRACT Effects of Panax notoginseng saponins on chronic renal failure. Kwun-Ho Lee Dept. of Oriental Medicine Graduate School of Dongshin University Directed by Prof. Young-Seung, Kim, O.M.D., Ph. D. The aim of present study was to investigate recovery effects of Panax notoginseng saponins(Panax) which has been used clinically in chronic renal failure therapy. Mice had 5/6 nephrectomy to induce chronic renal failure. The results were as follows: 1. The protein amout in urine per 24hrs of Panax treated group as compared to the control group was significantly reduced. 2. The albumin and HDL-cholesterol amout in blood of Panax treated group as compared to the control group significantly increased. The creatinine level in blood of Panax treated group as compared to the control group was significantly inhibited. 3. The construction change in kidney of Panax treated group as compared to the control group was significantly inhibited. 4. The factor(TGF-β1, type IV collagen, Macrophage/monocyte antigen(ED-1) and angiotensin II type 1 receptor(AT1)) of Panax treated group as compared to the control group was significantly inhibited which induce the construction change in kidney. The above results suggest that Panax partially improved the function of the kidney. Key words : Panax notoginseng saponins, nephrectomy, chronic renal failure
