ABSTRACT Effects of 10 weeks of dance sports training on body composition, blood lipids and aerobic capacity in adult obese women Gi-Taek Lee Department of Physical Education Graduate School of Dongshin University Supervised by Professor Min-Joo An, Ph. D. The study was designed to examine the effects of 10 weeks of dance sports training on body composition, blood lipids and aerobic capacity in adult obese women. Twenty-two adult obese women volunteered to participate in the study as subjects and were assigned to one of two groups, i.e., dance sports training group (n=11) and control group (n=11). The subjects in dance sports training group participated in three kinds of dance sports for 40 minute/day, three times/week for 10 weeks, whereas the subjects in control group were asked to maintain normal lifestyle during the period of treatment. Body composition, blood lipids, and maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) were measured before and after the intervention. Data were compared between pre- and post-test as well as between dance sports training group and control group utilizing two-way ANOVA with repeated measures. Main results of the present study were as follows: 1) Weight, BMI and % body fat were significantly decreased in dance sports training group, whereas there were no significant changes in the variables in control group. 2) High density lipoprotein (HDL-C) was significantly increased in dance sports training group and total cholesterol (TC) was significantly decreased in dance sports training group, whereas there were no significant changes in the variables in control group. 3) Maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) was significantly increased in dance sports training group, whereas there were no significant changes in the variables in control group. It was concluded that the 10 weeks of dance sports training would have positive effects on body composition, blood lipid and aerobic capacity in adult obese women. Research investigating effects of a longer period of dance sports training on blood lipid profiles and aerobic capacity would be warranted in the future.
