ABSTRACT Art Makeup Design Using Works of Kieth Haring - Focus on Cartoon Elements - Ji-yeon Jeong Department of Cosmetology Graduate School, Dongshin University (Supervised by Professor Eun-Ju Kang) Art makeup as one of diverse makeup areas which is artistic, creative and unique has been changing with changing trends of the 21st century. Owing to existentialism, surrealism, change in philosophical and art trends, it has become a means of expressing internal values beyond the meaning of simple decoration. Furthermore, it has become an important means to express artistic meaning including clothing and ornamentation, focusing on thematic colors and expressing methods(Kim, Nam-Hee, 2002). Thus, art makeup is breaking away from fixed frames through brilliant colors, creative methods and new expressing skills, In particular, natural materials are usually used to express images of themes, features and patterns. It has been developed as unique art that new images are created rather than simple beauty is pursued for(Choi, Su-Jin, 2021). Therefore, modern art makeup as a genre of art is a creative activity to create what artists would like to express in a new way(Song, Min-Ah, 2023). Kieth Haring who expressed graffiti in cartoon in 1980s is an artist an philosopher. Under the influence of pop art which was in fashion in 1960s, his works were represented with simple lines and vivid colors. As he created witty and humorous works and was popular worldwide, he drew pictures on the walls of subways and streets where messages against racial discrimination and anti-nuclear weapons were expressed(Oh, Jae-Gyeong, 2011). There are a lots of cases that Kieth Haring ‘s art works are used for designers’ fashion goods including clothing, shoes, bags and watches as well as beauty area. Previous studies on use of cartoon elements of Kieth Haring were: Im, Soo-Jin(2004),「Keith Haring’s Works Seen Through Cartoon’s Attributes」, Jo, Yoon-Soo(2013), 「A Study on Funky Pop Fashion Design Using Kieth Haring’s Art Works」, Jang, Oui-Jin(2015), 「A Study on Contemporary Art Education Program Using Cartoon Expression」, Kim, Myeong-Hee(2016) 「A Study on Nail Art Design Using Cartoon Image Features of Neo Pop Art」, and Bae-Se-Ji(2016), 「Nail Art Design Using Neo Pop Art」. However, as the studies on cartoon elements in Kieth Haring’s works are limited to nail art, those on art makeup are insignificant. Therefore, this study analyzed cartoon elements in Kieth Haring’s artistic works and used the results to design art makeup in diverse skills and variegated colors. The makeup design is an art work design which would make a contribution to expression of creative art design as an artistic work beyond expression of simple beauty. The study investigated cartoon elements in Kieth Haring’s art works, design cases using his works as a motif, the concept and skills of art makeup based on theses, internet retrieval, specialized books. For the design, 6 pieces of Kieth Haring’s works of art where use of icons and characters, and compartment were well-represented were targeted and then art makeup design for which cartoon colors were applied were presented. The results are presented as follows: First, for DesignⅠ, with an icon as a motif, red and white colors were us to express people and heart as his representative icons. The black outline was drawn around the figures and stone was used as an objet to upgrade quality of the design. Second, for Design Ⅱ, with an icon as a motif, yellow color with high chroma was usually used. Above the eyes, the upper half of the body and the upper part of wings of angles were expressed in object style. In respec to painting style, the lower part of the people and the angel’s wings, and lips were expressed below the eyes. Black outline was drawn and highlight line was drawn around the head of the angle. Third, for Design Ⅲ, the compartment technique was used as a motif. the face was compartmented into four parts and scissors and tools were drawn in the four compartments. After red, yellow, bluish green and gray colors were used, and black outline and highlight line were drawn, stone was pasted on the eyes as an object for creative design works. Fourth, for Design Ⅳ, the compartment technique was used as a motif. the face was compartmented and icons of people were drawn in the compartments. Then red, yellow, blue and incarnadine were used, and black outline and highlight line was drawn. For clear compartment, pearl stickers were used for expression of an object. Fifth, for Design Ⅴ, use of characters was selected as a motif for art makeup. For an object around the eyes, Andy Mouse, and people icons of red, orange color, yellow, blue and purple colors were printed, cut out and pasted. Lips were colored in red, orange, yellow, blue and purple. Sixth, for Design Ⅵ, the use of characters was used as a motif of the design. with eyes in center on either side of which wolves were drawn in light blue, red and white, and black outline was drawn. To express fur of wolves, bubble wrap was used as an object. lips were colored in green to enhance creativity. Thus, this study analyzed cartoon elements in Kieth Haring’s works of art and applied them for art makeup design. As his cartoon elements are simple a impromptu and his painting is characteristic, it was confirmed that they deserve to be applied for art makeup. In his works of art, vivid colors are connected with simple and significant lines, which can be used for creation of art makeup as is felt like cartoon. For expression of object to upgrade quality of dsign, stone, pearls, paper and bubble wrap were used, through which a cubic effect could be expressed like Kieth Haring’s cartoon painting. To sum up, this study analyzed cartoon elements of Kieth Haring’s works of art and grafted them into art makeup to create variegated makeup design results. For the unique design, this study added object technique to painting technique of art makeup and used primary colors with high chroma. However, there are limitations in the study. As the design was expressed on masks, not on human, it was not realistic and the design was the result of simple application. It is suggested that further studies should apply the design for human and based on the results of the study, more creative studies using diverse characteristics of Kirth Haring’s works of art should be performed. Finally, it is expected that this study would be helpful to the development of art makeup as an one of art fields and studies on art makeup design would be more actively performed

초 록 키스 해링 작품을 응용한 아트 메이크업 디자인 - 만화적 요소를 중심으로 - 정 지 연 동신대학교 대학원 뷰티미용학과 (지도교수 강은주) 메이크업의 한 분야인 아트 메이크업은 예술적이고, 독창적이면서 창조적인 분야로서 21세기의 메이크업 시대 흐름에 따라 변하고 있다. 실존주의와 초현실주의, 철학사조와 미술사조의 변화에 힘입어 단순한 치장과 장식적 의미가 아닌 내면의 가치까지 표현하는 수단이 되었다. 더 나아가 주제에 따른 색채와 표현 방법을 중심으로 현대에 이르러 의복의 요소, 장식의 요소 등 예술의 범위로 의미를 갖는 중요한 표현수단이 되었다(김남희, 2002). 이처럼 아트 메이크업은 사람의 얼굴이나 신체의 일부에 다양한 재료와 화려한 색채, 창의적인 방법과 새로운 표현기법으로 고정된 틀에서 벗어나고 있다. 특히 주제의 이미지와 특징, 무늬 등을 사물이나 자연의 재료로 활용하는 방식을 많이 사용하고 있다. 단순히 미를 추구하는 것이 아닌 새로운 이미지를 창조하여 독창적인 가치를 나타내는 예술로 발전하고 있다(최수진, 2021). 따라서 현대의 아트 메이크업은 예술분야의 한 장르로써 아티스트가 표현 하고자 하는 의미를 새로운 방식으로 창조하는 창작 활동이다.(송민아, 2023). 1980년대에 그래피티 표현을 만화적으로 표현한 키스 해링은 예술가이면서 철학자이다. 1960년대 유행했던 팝아트 양식의 영향으로 그의 작품은 간결한 선, 강렬한색 등을 표현하였다. 재치와 유머가 있는 작품이 많아 전 세계의 대중적인 인기를 끌었던 키스 해링은 뉴욕의 지하철 벽면과 길거리를 도화지 삼아 드로잉을 하며 인종차별과 반핵 등 그림에 담고자 하는 메시지를 표현하였다(오재경, 2011). 현대에는 키스 해링 작품이 옷, 신발, 가방, 시계 등 많은 디자이너의 패션 상품에 활용되는 사례가 많이 보이며 뷰티 분야에서도 활용이 되고 있다. 키스 해링의 만화적 요소를 활용한 선행 연구를 살펴보면 임수진(2004) 「만화적 속성을 통해 본 키스 해링(Keith Haring)의 작품 연구」, 조윤수(2013) 「키스 해링 작품의 만화적 요소를 응용한 펑키팝 패션디자인 연구」, 장어진(2015) 「만화적 표현을 활용한 현대미술 수업 모형 연구」, 김명희(2016) 「네오 팝 아트의 만화적 이미지 특성을 응용한 네일아트 디자인 연구」, 배세지(2016) 「네오 팝 작품을 응용한 네일아트 디자인」이 있다. 하지만 뷰티 분야에서 키스 해링의 만화적 요소를 활용한 연구는 네일아트에 국한되어 있어 아트 메이크업에 대한 연구는 미비한 실정이다. 이에 본 연구의 목적은 키스 해링 작품의 만화적 요소를 분석하고 이를 활용하여 다양한 기법과 다채로운 색감으로 아트 메이크업을 디자인 하고자 한다. 이를 통해 단순히 아름다운 표현을 하는 것이 아니라 예술 작품으로서의 아트 메이크업을 제시함으로써 아트 메이크업의 창의적 디자인 발상에 기여하고 예술 작품으로서 인정받는데 도움이 되고자 한다. 연구방법은 학위논문, 인터넷 검색, 전문 서적 등을 중심으로 키스 해링 작품의 만화적 요소, 키스 해링의 작품을 모티브한 디자인 사례, 아트 메이크업의 개념과 기법에 대해 고찰하였다. 작품제작은 만화적 요소인 아이콘의 사용, 칸 나눔 기법, 캐릭터의 사용의 특징이 잘 나타난 키스 해링 작품 6개를 선정하여 만화적 색채를 적용한 아트 메이크업을 제시하고자 한다. 본 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 작품 Ⅰ은 키스 해링 작품의 만화적 요소 중 아이콘의 사용에 관한 작품으로 모티브를 선정하였고 빨간색, 흰색을 사용하여 키스 해링의 대표적 아이콘인 사람과 하트를 그려 작품을 표현하였다. 그 주변에 검은색 강조 선을 그린 후 스톤을 오브제로 사용하여 표현함으로써 작품의 완성도를 높여주었다. 둘째, 작품 Ⅱ는 키스 해링 작품의 만화적 요소 중 아이콘의 사용에 관한 작품을 모티브로 선정하여 만화적 색채인 고채도의 노란색을 주로 사용하였다. 눈 위쪽에는 사람의 상반신과 천사의 날개 윗부분을 오브제 기법으로 표현하였다. 회화적 기법으로는 눈 아래쪽에 사람의 하반신과 천사의 날개 아랫부분, 입술을 표현하였다. 검정색 테두리를 그리고 천사 머리 주변에 강조 선을 그려 작품을 마무리하였다. 셋째, 작품 Ⅲ는 키스 해링 작품의 만화적 요소 중 칸 나눔 기법에 관한 작품으로 모티브를 선정하였다. 얼굴 구도를 생각하며 4개의 칸을 나누어 주었고, 그 칸에 맞 춰 사람들과 가위, 기계 등을 그려주었다. 빨간색, 노란색, 청록색, 회색을 채색하고 검은색 테두리와 강조 선을 그린 후 눈에 스톤을 붙여 오브제 기법으로 표현함으로써 창의적인 작품으로 표현하였다. 넷째, 작품 Ⅳ는 키스 해링 작품의 만화적 요소 중 칸 나눔 기법에 관한 작품으로 모티브를 선정하였다. 얼굴 구도를 기준으로 칸을 나누어 주었고, 칸에 맞춰 사람들 의 아이콘을 그린 후 빨간색, 노란색, 파란색, 살색을 채색하고 검은색 테두리와 강조선을 그려주었다. 칸이 나뉘어 보일 수 있도록 진주 스티커를 사용해 오브제 기법으로 표현하였다. 다섯째, 작품 Ⅴ는 키스 해링 작품의 만화적 요소 중 캐릭터의 사용에 관한 작품을 모티브로 선정하여 아트 메이크업을 디자인하였다. 눈 주변에 오브제 기법을 사용하기 위해 앤디 마우스와 빨간색, 주황색, 노란색, 파란색, 보라색 등의 사람들 아이콘을 프린트하여 오린 후 부착하였다. 입술은 회화적 기법으로 빨간색, 주황색, 노란색, 파란색, 보라색을 채색하여 마무리하였다. 여섯째, 작품 Ⅵ는 키스 해링 작품의 만화적 요소 중 캐릭터의 사용에 관한 작품을 모티브로 선정하여 작품을 디자인하였다. 눈을 중심으로 늑대를 양옆에 그려 하늘색, 빨간색, 흰색으로 채색한 후 검은색 테두리를 그려주었다. 늑대의 털을 표현하기 위해 폼폼이를 사용하여 오브제 기법으로 표현하였다. 입술은 초록색으로 채색하여 작품의 창의성을 높여 디자인하였다. 이처럼 본 연구는 키스 해링 작품의 만화적 요소를 분석하고 응용해서 아트 메이크업 디자인을 제시할 수 있었다. 키스 해링 작품의 만화적 요소는 간결하면서 즉흥성을 띄고 개성 있는 회화적 작품들이 많아 아트 메이크업에 응용할 가치가 있음을 확인하였다. 또한 다채로운 원색의 색채와 간단하고 함축적인 선들을 결합하여 만화적 느낌의 아트 메이크업을 가능하게 했다. 작품의 완성도를 위한 오브제 표현은 스톤, 진주, 종이, 폼폼이 등을 다양하게 사용하여 디자인함으로써 키스 해링의 만화적인 도상의 입체감을 표현할 수 있었다. 이상의 결과로 본 연구의 결론은 키스 해링 작품의 만화적 요소를 분석하여 아트 메이크업에 접목시킴으로써 다채로운 아트 메이크업 디자인 결과를 도출하였으며, 아트 메이크업의 회화적 기법에 오브제 기법을 더하고 만화적 색채인 고채도 원색을 사용하여 제작함으로써 독창적인 디자인을 제시할 수 있었다는데 의의가 있다. 연구의 한계점은 실제 사람이 아닌 마스크에 표현함으로써 사실적인 면이 부족하다는 점과 단순하게 작품을 응용했다는 점이다. 향후 후속 연구에는 사람에게 직접 활용한 연구 결과물을 도출하여야 할 것이며, 본 연구를 바탕으로 향후 키스 해링 작품의 다양한 특징을 활용한 창의적인 연구가 이루어지기를 바란다. 마지막으로 본 연구가 아트 메이크업이 예술의 한 분야로 자리매김하는데 도움이 되길 바라며 아트 메이크업 디자인 연구가 더욱 활발해지길 기대한다.
